The Company was founded in 1952 as “See Yong Construction” and renamed in 1967 to “See Yong & Son Construction”. In 1980, it was restructured to acquire its present name of “See Yong & Son Construction Sdn Bhd” , or “SYS” for short.
Since inception, SYS has been involved in the construction industry mainly in civil engineering works and works related to river and sea. Prior to 1985, SYS was a registered Class ‘A’ contractor with most government bodies, particularly the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Drainage & Irrigation Department (JPS). In 1985, with the centralisation of all government departmental registration, SYS has since held a Class ‘A’ registration with the Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor (PKK) in civil engineering works, enabling it to tender for projects of unlimited contract sum from all government agencies. In 1996, SYS also registered with the newly incorporated Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) as a Grade G7 (the highest grade) civil engineering contractor.
Since 1978, SYS has actively participated in tenders for projects financed by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, such as the Muda, Kemubu and Besut Irrigation Scheme, the Western Johor Development Scheme, the Asajaya Agricultural Development Scheme, the Kemasin Rural Development Scheme and the Samarahan Integrated Agricultural Development Scheme. It had been successful in most of these tenders and had carried out approximately RM120 million of works under these schemes.
SYS is well known in drainage, irrigation, river and coastal projects throughout the Peninsular Malaysia, and is active in Sarawak since 1983. It is also active in marine projects such as construction of jetty, wharf and breakwater. An important chapter was added to SYS when it acquired its first cutter-suction dredger in 1985, to become the first local pioneer in dredging and reclamation works. Since then, additional dredgers and marine plants have been acquired and experience accrued through hands-on experience.
In 1995, SYS ventured into the construction of cooling water system intake/outfall pipelines for the power station and refinery industry.
Today, SYS employs some 40 professional and management staff, and at any time 150 direct labour, of which two-third is skilled. The Managing Director takes an active interest in projects undertaken by the company to ensure their smooth execution and delivery. The Company is also well advised by its Chairman, who has more than 38 years of exposure in the construction industry.
SYS recognises the importance of quality, timely completion, the need to complete projects within budget and the need to remain competitive. To maintain this objective, the Company has preserved the strategy of executing works direct instead of sub-letting them.
Backed with a large fleet of plant and equipment, capable personnel and substantial construction experience, SYS look forward to further challenges and contribution to the growth of the nation.
